About Us:

Firehouse 4 or Station 4, or just 4's is the oldest firehouse in use by SFD. The Station was first built in 1902 on 26th street between L street and Capitol. In 1933 Firehouse 4 was rebuilt at our current location in Midtown Sacramento, CA off of Alhambra Blvd.

Housed here are two pieces of apparatus: Eng4ine and Med4ic.

We have a staffing of 4 on the engine with a least one being a paramedic and one paramedic on the medic (ambulance).

Med4ic crews toggle on and off the Medic. The normal rotation is 2 shifts on the Medic and than 2 shifts on an Engine or Truck. With our new 48/96 schedule, a 10 day break is given between Engine and Medic rotations. At this time, a firefighter's first 3-4 years will be split between the Medic and Engine or Truck.

S.F.D has 23 engines, 8 trucks, 13 medics, and 1 heavy rescue. We have 4 Firefighters (Captain, Engineer, Firefighter, Firefighter) on our engines and trucks and approx. 95% are staffed with a paramedic.

The City of Sacramento proper along with our 3 contracts (Natomas, Fruitridge, and Pacific) ran 64,749 emergencies in 2005 with 3,274 being fire calls. In 2006 S.F.D. ran 66,284 emergencies, 2007 S.F.D. ran 68,750, and 2008 S.F.D. ran 70,907 emergencies.

Sacramento is the 7th largest City in California. Sacramento City has a population of 475,743 (per dept.of finance see links). And an additional population of 50,000-70,000 do to our contract areas as mentioned above (approx number).

Because Sacramento is the Capital of California, there is a large daytime population, due to many state buildings and offices.  Sacramento grows during the daytime, Monday through Friday, adding 165,000 to its population.

Building Types:

Station 4 has a mix of building types in our "First Due". Here are some examples:Victorians, 3 and 4 story victorian style apartments, 3,000 to 6,000 square feet homes in the "Fabulous 40's" neighborhood. Multiple Bars, Strip malls, 2-4 story office buildings, 2 story apartments, Low rises 4-10 stories, 2 Hospitals, Mental Health Hospital, Numerous dialysis clinics, Portions of Hwy 50, Hwy 99, and Business 80, Portions of The American River Railroad.

Our 2nd due area is bordered by firehouse 1,2, 6, 8, and 19. These areas also have their target hazards and building types.

The Sacramento Regional Fire/EMS Communications Center (SRFECC) is the third largest fire dispatch center in the State of California dispatching over 150,000 incidents annually. SRFECC provides fire protection and emergency medical service (EMS) dispatching for nearly all of Sacramento County and parts of Placer County covering over 1,000 square miles and serving over 1.3 million residents.
